What has now become an occasion to wear sweatpants and flip-flops was once an opportunity for custom-made couture dresses and designer shoes. It’s possible this shift in travel style came as air travel got much more democratic over the last several decades. Back in the 1950s-1980s, what was considered the “Golden Age of Travel,” fares were double what they are today meaning travel was designed for the elite few who could afford it.
