7 Travel Wardrobe Classics You'll Want to Fly in for Years to Come

retro travel glamour

MONICA MENDAL
MAY 21, 2018
There was once a time when travel used to be glamorous — yes, really. What has now become an occasion to wear sweatpants and flip-flops was once an opportunity for custom-made couture dresses and designer shoes.
It’s possible this shift in travel style came as air travel got much more democratic over the last several decades. Back in the 1950s-1980s, what was considered the “Golden Age of Travel,” fares were double what they are today meaning travel was designed for the elite few who could afford it. You’d get fine dining on an hour-long flight and spacious coach seats that looked like today’s business class.
Today, airports are larger and busier, airplane food (if you’re traveling far enough to get it) doesn’t exactly qualify as fine dining, and legroom is shrinking by the minute. These reasons alone are warranted causes to dress more comfortably during long travel days.
But why sacrifice style entirely? While the glamour of transport has certainly elapsed, the excitement of a new destination, a break from reality, or the promise of a foreign romance are all reasons to dress up. And there are ways to attain that chic, retro-inspired travel style without sacrificing the comfort we all seek for our commutes.
Below, a round-up of seven pieces that will elevate your travel wardrobe and infuse a bit of glamour back into your travel routine for decades to come.

Korean Food Guide: 44 Things to Eat in Seoul, South Korea and Where to Try Them

Before our trips to Korea, my knowledge of Korean food was pretty much limited to  kimchi ,  bulgogi , and  japchae . My exposure to the cuisine never really went beyond that in spite of having several Korean friends, including a Korean roommate for a couple of years. I think part of it is due to how damn good Korean barbecue is. It’s so delicious that it was pretty much all I ever looked for when eating at Korean restaurants. Bulgogi for my main course, and a plate of japchae on the side. That was it. But thanks to our two trips to Seoul, in 2015 and 2017, my Korean food vocabulary has expanded to over 40 dishes. As delicious and universally appealing as Korean barbecue is, I’ve learned that there’s so much more to the cuisine than just bulgogi and  galbi . Things like  ganjang gejang ,  jokbal , and  naengmyeon aren’t as well known outside of Korea but they are dishes well worth flying for. Ganjang gejang was particularly memorable. After waiting...
