What has now become an occasion to wear sweatpants and flip-flops was once an opportunity for custom-made couture dresses and designer shoes. It’s possible this shift in travel style came as air travel got much more democratic over the last several decades. Back in the 1950s-1980s, what was considered the “Golden Age of Travel,”  fares were double what they are today  meaning travel was designed for the elite few who could afford it. You’d get fine dining on an hour-long flight and spacious coach seats that looked like today’s business class.
