Latest landmark to open May 22 for all to enjoy
Busan Port Bridge offers dazzling views from deck or land
On May 8, the illumination ceremony of the landscape lights of Busan Port Bridge was held. The bridge will officially open on May 22.
Busan Port Bridge, which offers an amazing vantage point to see the beautiful scenery of the city as well as a mesmerizing night view, will finally open May 22. Busan City announced that the last “bridge over the sea” linking the east and west of Busan will finally open after seven years. Construction began in April 2007.
With a length of 3.33 kilometers (2 miles) and width of 18.6 meters to 28.7 meters (61 feet to 94 feet) a total of four to six lanes, the Port Bridge is the longest steel composite, cable-stayed span in the world. Cable-stayed refers to a type of bridge that fixes in place the upper deck with steel cables drawn from the foundation towers of the bridge.
The distance between each foundation tower is 540 meters and the deck is 68 meters above the water, so large scale passenger and container ships can pass. Busan Port Bridge was designed to withstand winds of 80 meters per second and an earthquake that measures 7 on the Richter scale.
The bridge itself is highly valued as a new landmark of the city, with its diamond shaped foundation towers rising 190 meters above the sea. And the brilliance and grandeur of the bridge is more conspicuous at night.
2,076 lights, including LED bulbs, have been installed on the foundation towers and steel cables, creating a magnificent array of illumination. The Port Bridgeoffers a bird’s-eye view of Mount Yongdu Park, Mount Baekyang, Mount Hwangnyeong, Mount Geumjeong and the downtown area of Jung-gu (district), Dong-gu, and Yeongdo-gu.
Starting May 23, the Busan City Tour Bus will operate the Skyline course that travels over the Port Bridge. Passengers on the new course also will be able to visit the Skywalk at Oryuk Islets as well as the Beacon Mound of Mount Hwangnyeong.
The opening of the bridge completes the 52-kilometer coastal circulation road network of Busan that includes Diamond (Gwangan) Bridge, Busan Port Bridge, Namhang Bridge, Eulsukdo Bridge, Shinho Bridge, Gadeok Bridge and Geoga Bridge. The coastal road network reduced the amount of time it takes to travel from Ulsan to Busan to Geoje from three hours to two.
